What is thyroid hormone suppression therapy?

Thyroid hormone suppression therapy is a form of treatment that involves giving a patient a pharmacologic preparation of thyroid hormone in an attempt to try to shrink a thyroid nodule. It is often started on a trial basis when a nodule has been evaluated and is known to be benign. It may also be started as part of the process of evaluation to help determine whether a nodule is likely to be cancer.

In essence, thyroid hormone suppression therapy consists of giving a patient a dose of thyroid hormone that suppresses TSH, and then monitoring to see if this helps shrink a nodule.
