How is a dose of levothyroxine chosen?

An initial dose of levothyroxine is often chosen based on a patient\'s body weight. Levothyroxine tablets are manufactured in units called micrograms (abbreviated mg or mcg). Most patients require a dose of approximately 1 microgram per pound of body weight. Doses of levothyroxine used for thyroid hormone suppression therapy are usually slightly higher than those used to treat hypothyroidism.
