How is recurrent thyroid cancer evaluated?
When recurrent thyroid cancer has been diagnosed, further evaluation is usually focused on determining whether or not thyroid cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. This may have a direct impact on plans for any further treatment. Thorough evaluation may require the use of different radiographic studies, including ultrasound, CT scans, MRI scans, X-rays, radioactive iodine scans, and PET scans. If indicated, it may be necessary to perform further fine needle aspirations or incisional biopsies.
