What determines whether any further treatment with radioactive iodine is necessary?

Further treatment with radioactive iodine may be necessary if follow-up radioactive iodine scans or thyroglobulin blood tests suggest that detectable thyroid cancer cells may still be present. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration in deciding whether to proceed with further evaluation and treatment. These include the stage of thyroid cancer at the time of diagnosis, the degree to which test results are suspicious for persistence or recurrence, and the preferences of the physicians involved in treating the patient.
