What further treatment is necessary after a patient has received radioactive iodine?

Patients who have received radioactive iodine should be followed by a physician and evaluated and monitored on a regular basis. Effective monitoring usually incorporates routine physical exams, blood tests, and further radioactive iodine scans if necessary. Patients who have undergone thyroid surgery and treatment with radioactive iodine should be treated with thyroid hormone at doses targeted to suppress TSH to appropriate levels.
