What is a cold nodule?

A thyroid nodule that does not take up tracer on a thyroid scan will produce a lighter spot against a darker background of normal thyroid tissue when when a picture is generated. This marks the thyroid nodule as being a cold nodule. While the majority of cold nodules are benign, a small percentage of them may be cancer. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of a cold nodule can help determine whether it is suspicious for cancer.
