What is a metastasis?

A metastasis is a growth that develops when cells from a cancer in one part of the body travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to another site in the body. The lymphatic system is a network comprised of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and the spleen. These structures play an important role in the regulation of the immune system. When cells from a cancer spread throughout the body, they often move through the lymphatic system and start to grow within the lymph nodes, causing them to gradually enlarge. Cells from a cancer may also enter the bloodstream and be carried directly to other organs such as the lungs, bones, liver, or brain. These cells take root in their new location and start to multiply and expand, forming a site of cancer called a metastasis.
