What is an inadequate specimen?

A report of an inadequate specimen from a fine needle aspiration biopsy means that not enough cells exist in the specimen to provide an accurate answer. In this situation it is usually necessary to repeat the fine needle aspiration biopsy to get an adequate specimen.
