What is calcitonin?

Calcitonin is a biochemical substance that is produced by specific cells in the thyroid gland called the parafollicular cells or C-cells. It may play a role in regulating calcium in the bones. In a specific form of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid cancer, the level of calcitonin in the bloodstream may be markedly elevated. If there is any suspicion that medullary thyroid cancer may be present in thyroid gland, a blood test for calcitonin can be checked to see if it is abnormally elevated.
