What is familial medullary thyroid cancer?

Familial medullary thyroid cancer (FMTC) is an inherited disorder that leads to the development of medullary thyroid cancer without any other associated tumors. In general, patients with FMTC tend to develop detectable tumors at a later age than patients with MEN 2A and MEN 2B. They also tend to have a more favorable prognosis.
