What is follicular thyroid cancer?

Follicular thyroid cancer is the second most common form of thyroid cancer. The name "follicular" refers to the way that its cells are arrayed in spherical formations called follicles. Follicular thyroid cancer tends to be slow-growing. It has a tendency to metastasize, spreading outside of the thyroid gland to the lungs, bones, liver, or central nervous system. Follicular thyroid cancer is usually treated with thyroid surgery followed by radioactive iodine therapy and thyroid hormone treatment. Advanced cases may be treated with external beam radiation therapy.
