What is liothyronine?
Liothyronine is the pharmacologic preparation of triiodothyronine, one of the principal forms of thyroid hormone. Triiodothyronine, also known as T3, is the form of thyroid hormone that is directly active in different tissues throughout the body. The pharmacologic preparation of triiodothyronine is identical to the natural form produced by the body. It is manufactured under the trade name Cytomelâ. Liothyronine may be taken as an intermediate measure to ease the transition to complete thyroid hormone withdrawal. Its direct activity in different tissues throughout the body helps to limit symptoms of hypothyroidism that may develop during withdrawal.
