What is multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN)?
Multiple endocrine neoplasia (abbreviated MEN) is an inherited disorder that leads to the growth of tumors in specific endocrine glands. There are three different types of MEN, designated MEN 1, MEN 2A, and MEN 2B. Medullary thyroid cancer is one of the tumors that characteristically develops in patients with MEN 2A and MEN 2B. Other tumors that may develop in patients with MEN 2A include a tumor of the adrenal glands known as a pheochromocytoma, and increased growth of the parathyroid glands referred to as parathyroid hyperplasia. The other tumors that may develop in patients with MEN 2B include pheochromocytoma, and tumors called mucosal neuromas that may grow within the tongue, the lips, the gastrointestinal tract, and the urinary tract. Patients with MEN 2B also tend to have long thin arms and legs and very flexible joints.
