Who performs thyroid surgery?

Thyroid surgery may be performed by surgeons from a number of different specialties. Among subspecialists, there are a few surgeons who focus to a large extent on surgery related to the thyroid gland. These surgeons are usually referred to as endocrine surgeons (or more specifically, thyroid surgeons). Otorhinolaryngologists (also referred to as ear, nose, and throat surgeons, or head and neck surgeons) and orofacial surgeons also perform a number of thyroid operations. This is in part due to their specific expertise in exploring different regions of the neck. Thyroid surgery is also performed by some general surgeons and pediatric surgeons.
