Who should adjust the dose of levothyroxine?
In relative terms, thyroid cancer is a fairly uncommon disease. While most physicians are generally familiar with the goals of thyroid surgery and radioactive iodine treatment, many are less aware of the goals of thyroid hormone suppression therapy. This can lead to a great deal of confusion when physicians review patients' blood tests. Without careful analysis, patients may be mistakenly told that they are taking too much levothyroxine, when in fact their dose is precisely that which is required to maintain adequate suppression of TSH. For this reason, doses of levothyroxine should only be adjusted by physicians who are familiar with the target ranges of the thyroid function tests that are monitored as part of this treatment.
