Who should be tested for the RET proto-oncogene?

Any patient with newly diagnosed medullary thyroid cancer should be tested to check for the presence of mutations in the RET proto-oncogene. If a specific mutation is detected, all of the patient's first degree blood relatives (parents, brothers and sisters, and children) should undergo testing to determine if any of them harbor the same mutation. Members of families known to be affected by inherited medullary thyroid cancer should undergo testing even if they show no symptoms.
