Why are routine physical exams necessary?

Routine physical exams are a means of evaluating a patient for possible recurrence of thyroid cancer. If thyroid cancer persists or recurs after treatment, it may grow to an extent where it can be felt in the lower front part of the neck or in the lymph nodes located along the sides of the neck. This may be especially important in cases where persistent or recurrent thyroid cancer cannot be detected with blood tests or radioactive iodine scans.
